Red Devils enjoy memorable sectional meet

Hinsdale Central's Terry Ward earned his first trip to the state tournament in his third attempt. He will be joined by his freshman brother Tommy.

WRESTLING -- Hinsdale Central junior Terry Ward knows just how difficult it is to qualify for the state tournament.

So when his freshman brother Tommy Ward accomplished the feat in his first varsity season, he was impressed.

"He's got me beat," said Terry Ward, who also earned his first trip to state in his third attempt Saturday at the Class 3A De La Salle Sectional in Chicago. "He's doing a great job and I'm proud of him. He wasn't even starting at the beginning of the year, but he really pulled it all together at the right time. He is so tough and goes out there with complete fearlessness. I'm looking forward to going to state with him."

The top-four finishers in each weight class advance to the state tournament Friday and Saturday at the University of Illinois' Assembly Hall in Champaign.

Hinsdale Central set a program record with six state qualifiers.

Joining the Ward brothers at state will be seniors Joe Strocchia and David Lutz, junior Jack Allen and freshman Ernest Battaglia.

"The guys wrestled hard and this is what it's all about, getting down to the state tournament and getting to Champaign," Hinsdale Central coach Jason Hayes said. "We talk about how all matches are preparation for the state tournament series and the guys came to wrestle. If we can go out and wrestle hard next week, anything can happen. Our goal is to come back with some state champions and state placers."

Allen is looking to make history for the Red Devils.

After placing second at state at 215 pounds last year, Allen is hoping to become the first state champion in program history.

Allen (40-1), who is ranked No. 1 in the state by illinoismatmen.com, placed first at 285 pounds Saturday. He beat De La Salle sophomore James Buss 7-5 in the championship match after pinning his first two opponents.

"I don't think I did too well," Allen said. "It was a bad performance in the finals. I have to be smarter out there and hit more shots and not just stand there. It was a bad match. I'm still pretty confident, but I've got to work a lot harder this week. It will be a good week of training."

Allen's lone loss of the season came at the Whitlatch Invitational when Moline senior Jeremy Howell pulled out a 3-2 semifinal victory Dec. 19.

"I was just thinking, don't lose any more after that," Allen said. "Losing is definitely motivation and not a fun thing to experience."

Hinsdale Central also had two second-place performances by freshmen Saturday.

Tommy Ward (17-8) lost to Leyden's Jesus Payan 10-5 in the 103-pound final, while Battaglia lost to Morton senior Emmanuel Macedo 12-8 in the 119 championship match.

"It's kind of cool going to Champaign with my brother and sharing the spotlight," Ward said. "He showed me the ropes this year. My goal was to go down state as a freshman and I was able to do it."

Ward's state berth is impressive considering he was unseeded with an 11-7 record before winning the Lyons Township Regional.

Ward shared mat time with freshman George Tolbert during the season before emerging as the starter for the postseason.

"Me and my friend George have been wrestling together since we were 5," Ward said. "We decided instead of challenging each other out, we would just switch off at the duals and tournaments. I'm just glad to make it to state."

Like Ward, Battaglia (37-9) also has a strong influence in older brother Frank Battaglia, who is Hinsdale Central's career leader in victories with 141 and single-season leader with 46.

The 2007 graduate, who wrestles at Northwestern, was a state qualifier as a freshman at 119 pounds and took third at state at 152 as a senior for the Red Devils.

"He's been basically my mentor my whole life," Ernest Battaglia said. "He's been showing me what I've been doing wrong. He's a great brother. Making state as a freshman is a big accomplishment. I'm just planning on going to state and having fun because most of these guys are much older, but I really want to place."

Terry Ward (34-10) finished third at 135 pounds, winning the third-place match by default.

Ward needed to avenge a regional defeat in order to lock up his state berth. After losing to Morton's Chepe Mariscal 15-12 in the Lyons Township Regional championship match, Ward beat him 8-3 in the consolation semifinals to reach the third-place match Saturday.

"I've worked many years for this," Ward said. "The last two years I really got sloppy. I probably should've made it, but I didn't. I'm glad I was able to come out here and really give it my all and make it. You really realize you can't leave anything on the mat, you have to go out there and wrestle your hardest. That's what I did today."

Strocchia (36-8 at 160) beat Proviso West's James Burns 5-2 in the third-place match after clinching his first state berth with an 8-2 win over St. Patrick's Charlie Doyle in the wrestle-back semifinals.

"The weird thing is that was probably the most calm I've ever been," Strocchia said of the win over Doyle. "I knew going in that I was going to win. There was no way I was going to lose. Making state is awesome. It's something my brother (team captain, team MVP and 2006 graduate Fred Garcia) didn't do. I'm at a loss for words. There's this feeling you get when you go down there and now I'm going to experience that. It's going to be fun."

Strocchia is thrilled to be going with workout partner Lutz, who also secured his first trip to state with a fourth-place finish at 171.

Lutz (39-6) is thrilled to be headed to Champaign after a promising junior campaign was cut short by a back injury last year. Lutz reached the third-place match by beating Oak Park-River Forest's Brock Friesen 3-2 in the consolation semifinals after pinning Friesen earlier in the season.

"Coming into this weekend I was kind of in a mental funk," Lutz said. "I was ready physically, but I really wasn't ready mentally. I definitely did not wrestle my best this tournament, so it's a relief to get through. It's a really big deal for me. I felt like last year I definitely should've gotten out, but the injury kind of (ruined) it for me."

Junior Matt Freyn (28-17) finished 3-2 at 112 pounds, falling one win shy of a state berth, losing to Lyons Township's Bob Garvick 8-3 in the wrestle-back semifinals.

At state Friday, Tommy Ward will take on Belleville West freshman Mech Spragins (40-1), while Battaglia will face Batavia senior Logan Arlis (38-1), Terry Ward will go up against Minooka senior Sean Kenny (34-6), Strocchia will challenge Crystal Lake South junior Kean Loupee (34-6), Lutz will face Deerfield senior Jeremy Fahler (39-2) and Allen will begin his quest at history with a match against Maine South junior Sean Sullivan (28-13).

"He's been working hard and believing in himself more," Hayes said of Allen. "He has a better attitude as far as his mindset. He goes out and wrestles hard, he's picked up his training and he's been to Champaign before and has been in the finals, so his goal is to be No. 1."
