Freyn reverses fortunes at regionals
February 9, 2010
By BILL STONE bstone@pioneerlocal.comWRESTLING

Hinsdale Central junior Matt Freyn had been in this stressful situation before.

Needing a top-three regional finish to advance, Freyn once again was trailing by one point in the third-place match at 112 pounds during Saturday's individual Class 3A Lyons Township Regional.

"I was actually in the same position last year. I was down one with 30 seconds left and I had to get out," Freyn said. "This year I got out."

With less than 10 seconds left, Freyn pulled out a reversal for two points and a 6-5 victory over Proviso West's Christian Harris to be among seven Hinsdale Central sectional qualifiers.

"I was on the Proviso West's kid side of it last year so I feel good to get over that this year," Freyn said. "I feel like I did have progress."

Returning all-state junior Jack Allen (37-1 at 285), seniors Joe Strocchia (33-7 at 160) and David Lutz (37-4 at 171) and freshman Tommy Ward (15-7 at 103) won regional titles, and Terry Ward (29-9 at 135) was second. Freshman Ernest Battaglia (34-8 at 119) advanced with a third-place walkover victory by virtue of a previous head-to-head victory over his opponent at the regional.

Senior Sean Sullivan (20-17 at 215) just missed advancing, taking fourth with his third-place opponent taking that match by virtue of an earlier victory.

Wrestlers will need top-four finishes at the De La Salle Sectional Friday and Saturday to advance to the state meet. As a team, Hinsdale Central (163.5 points) finished 29.5 points behind champion LT, which also advanced seven individuals.

"The goal was to come and win it (as a team). Some of the guys didn't get off on the right foot, but we saw some good things from some guys," Hinsdale Central coach Jason Hayes said. "This is tournament time. The guys have got to believe. They've been trained right. We've got a lot of guys in that situation right now who are thinking positive and the goal is to get all seven down to state."

Terry Ward is a three-time sectional qualifier and Strocchia also competed at sectionals last year. Ward and Strocchia each lost one-point sectional matches in 2009 that would have advanced them to state.

Freyn (25-15) lost his third-place match at the 2009 regionals 2-1.

"I think if I had the experience that I have now, I would definitely had been able to have gotten out (last year)," Freyn said. "I was disappointed so that drove me through the spring. Then I went to a bunch of camps and I did well at those. I just got a lot better. I still have a lot of work to do, though."

"You've got to wrestle the full six minutes and Matt Freyn did a good job of wrestling the whole time," Hayes said. "He worked hard all summer and in the offseason so that helped out a lot. A lot of the guys that made it today, they worked year round and do the right things."

Tommy Ward, Terry's brother, did a lot of things right as well, winning the regional despite being unseeded and even winning an additional fourth feed-in match. Ward beat No. 1 seed Rodrick Smith of Proviso West 7-4 in the semifinal and pinned LT's Conor Condon in the final.

"I had a couple of tough matches and kind of expected to get top three. The semis was probably the hardest. I just got a lead and held onto it," Tommy Ward said. "(Terry has) showed me the ropes. He's a pretty good inspiration."

After taking fourth at regionals in 2008, Lutz is hoping to reach state as he planned to do last year before a torn muscle in his back ended his season prematurely.

Strocchia, who filled in at Lutz's spot, was fourth at last year's regional but went to sectionals as the first alternate because of an injury. After just missing state with that second chance, Strocchia is determined to make the most of his second trip to sectionals.

"The match that determined me to go to state, I was winning 9-2 (and lost 12-11)," Strocchia said. "I was going up at the beginning of (this year), I had a little downfall, hurt my knee. I was kind of wrestling stupid. But this is what I came here to do. I wrestled all of my high school career for this moment."

•Fenwick (Oak Park) senior Phil Gough of Hinsdale (20-12) finished second at 152 at the Class 3A individual St. Ignatius Regional to advance to the De La Salle Sectional.
