Hinsdale Central looking to bounce back for State series
February 2, 2010By KEN RYAN kryan@pioneerlocal.com

WRESTLING -- First-year Hinsdale Central wrestling coach Jason Hayes has had high expectations right from the start this season.

Despite his team dropping a disappointing 31-25 West Suburban Conference Silver Division dual to rival Lyons Township Friday, the lofty goals haven't changed.

Hinsdale Central had a chance to clinch second place outright in the Silver, but instead finished with the same record as LT at 4-2. Defending state champion Oak Park was 6-0 to capture the conference crown.

"We had three matches that could've gone either way," Hayes said. "It was a tough dual. If we could've executed and finished some shots, the dual could've been a totally different outcome. We'll see them again this weekend. We have to work on some things, but then we're going to try and win the regional."

Hinsdale Central (20-2 record) got victories from Terry Ward (pin at 135), David Lutz (pin at 171), Jack Allen (pin at 285), Tom Ward (14-3 major decision at 103) and Ernest Battaglia (decision at 119).

The Red Devils beat Waubonsie Valley 45-24 Saturday behind victories from Kevin Roberts (forfeit at 103), Matt Freyn (technical fall at 112), Battaglia (pin at 119), Terry Ward (pin at 135), Max Evers (decision at 140), Joe Strocchia (decision at 160), Lutz (pin at 171), Sean Sullivan (pin at 215) and Allen (major decision at 285).

Hinsdale Central will now compete in the Class 3A Lyons Township Regional Saturday. The top-three finishers in each weight class advance to the De La Salle Sectional Feb. 12-13 in Chicago.

"We've preached the whole week about the mental game of wrestling," Hayes said. "We talked about having a game plan and going out there and putting yourself in position to win the regional. You have to believe in yourself every time you step out on the mat. It's going to be a dogfight for the regional championship."

Hinsdale Central has faced a difficult schedule and has beat ranked teams such as Plainfield Central, Lockport and Mundelein.

While Hayes anticipates LT being his team's toughest challenge, he knows teams such as York and Proviso West have plenty of talented wrestlers capable of causing trouble for the Red Devils.

"Our kids are prepared," Hayes said. "We have a pretty good schedule that hopefully prepares us for the postseason. Everybody is 0-0 now and you have to go out and prove yourself and wrestle to the best of your ability."
