Devils continue winning ways, but seeking more -- 1/26/10 Doings Coverage

January 26, 2010

By KEN RYAN kryan@pioneerlocal.com

As much as first-year Hinsdale Central wrestling coach Jason Hayes is pleased with his team's performance this season, he knows the Red Devils haven't accomplished anything yet.

Hinsdale Central has compiled an impressive 19-1 dual-meet record.

"We're doing well right now," Hayes said. "We want to keep the momentum going. Every win is great for the kids and the program, but the kids have bigger goals."

The most immediate goal is to knock off West Suburban Conference Silver Division rival Lyons Township Friday in La Grange.

Defending state champion Oak Park (18-2) has already clinched the Silver championship with a 6-0 mark, but the Red Devils (4-1) can clinch second alone with a win over LT (14-6, 3-2 in Silver).

"We have a rival dual against LT Friday and then turn it around and see them the following Saturday for regionals," Hayes said. "Our team is hungry and wants to go out and wrestle hard. If they do that, they can accomplish anything they set their sights on."

Hinsdale Central beat Proviso West 45-13 in a Silver dual Friday in Hinsdale.

The Red Devils got wins from Steve Stefani (145), Joe Strocchia (160), David Lutz (171), Sean Sullivan (215), Jack Allen (285), Matt Freyn (112), Ernest Battaglia (119), David Hutchinson (125), Brad O'Donnell (130), Terry Ward (135) and Max Evers (140).

Hinsdale Central also won the Downers Grove South Triple Dual Saturday by beating Jacobs 59-18, Wheaton North 41-27 and Rockford East 60-12.

Against Jacobs, Hinsdale Central got wins from George Tolbert (103), Battaglia (119), Hutchinson (125), O'Donnell (135), Mo Rizvi (140), Stefani (145), Strocchia (160), Lutz (189), Sullivan (215) and Jim Kallas (285). The Red Devils got wins against Wheaton North from Tom Ward (103), Freyn (112), Battaglia (119), O'Donnell (130), Evers (140), Strocchia (160), Lutz (171) and Allen (285).

In the Rockford East victory, Tom Ward, Battaglia, Hutchinson, Chris Miller, Evers, Elliot Wilm, Strocchia, Lutz, Sullivan and Allen all got wins.

"I didn't know what to expect," Hayes said. "They were 18-5 last year and graduated a lot of seniors, but all the coaches from the past have done a good job of building the foundation. Now this year, the program is tweaking some things. We're big on changing little things to make big things happen. The kids are responding and having a great season so far."
