Strong Weekend for the Red Devils -- Chicagoland Wrestling.com
Hinsdale Central rebounds strong in Plainfield, St. Charles

A sixth-place finish at last Saturday’s Geneva tournament just wasn’t going to cut it for this year’s team at Hinsdale Central, ranked No. 14 in last week’s Illinois Best Weekly.

Six days later, the Red Devils redeemed themselves with a dual meet win over No. 2 Plainfield Central.

“I got on them pretty hard about how they wrestled at Geneva, and told them we had to make some adjustments,” Central coach Jason Hayes said. “We had a hard week of training, we’re working on our intensity, and they responded this week.”

“We pushed ourselves hard in practice this week,” Central’s Jack Allen said. “It was hard to breathe and everybody sweated through their sweatshirts, t-shirts, everything.”

In addition to Friday’s 29-28 win over Plainfield Central, that sweat helped Hinsdale Central sweep the competition on Saturday in a quad at St. Charles East that also included Willowbrook and Homewood-Flossmoor.

“Everyone was upset after Geneva,” Central’s Brad O’Donnell said. “But we came back and had a good weekend.”

The Plainfield Central dual

Friday’s dual started with a loss for the Red Devils, but it was one of those quality losses that any team needs in a dual against top competition.

Facing a wrestler pushing hard for a major decision win in Plainfield’s Terry Kubski, Hinsdale’s David Hutchinson held him to a straight 12-5 decision thanks to a late third-period reversal at 130 pounds.

“Hutch avoided the major with two seconds left in the match,” Hayes said. “That might have been the whole dual, right there.”

At 135 it was Terry Ward’s turn to come up big for Hinsdale. The senior used a takedown in overtime to win 3-1 over Ryan Soraghan, tying the score at 3-3. Plainfield’s Tyler Ledbetter won a 10-5 decision over Max Evers at 140, but a first-period pin by Steve Stefani at 145 put Hinsdale up 9-6.

Plainfield’s Eric Oyster took that lead right back with an 18-7 major over Elliot Wilm, and the Ellingwood brothers – Jordan and Josh – knocked off two of Hinsdale’s big guns at 160 and 171 pounds.

Jordan Ellingwood had the only takedown of the match in a 3-2 win over the Red Devils’ Joe Strocchia, and Plainfield went up 19-9 when Josh Ellingwood posted a second-period fall over David Lutz.

A betting man, told heading into the dual that Strocchia and Lutz would lose their matches on Friday, would have likely bet the farm on a Plainfield Central victory.

You would have lost, thanks to a string of quality performances from the Hinsdale Central wrestlers. “We’re lucky – we had people pull through where maybe it wasn’t expected,” Central’s Brad O’Donnell said.

The Red Devils won two of the next three matches, starting with a 6-4 decision at 189 by Justin Katzovitz over Plainfield’s Don Burns. “That was a big win in a big dual meet by Justin Katzovitz,” Hayes said.

The Wildcats answered with a pin at 215 by Nicoli Trevino over Pat Wilson, and led 25-12 heading into the marquee match of the night.

Plainfield’s Lavelle Howard and Hinsdale’s Jack Allen have been ranked in the top three all season among Illinois’ heavyweights.

Allen earned a 3-1 edge in takedowns en route to an 8-5 decision win that cut Plainfield’s lead to 25-18. “Howard’s big but Jack is very athletic and he got him moving,” Hayes said. “The crowd was into that match and it lived up to the hype.”

“I watched some tape of (Howard) from last year, and he seemed athletic,” Allen said. “I wanted to avoid shooting under him and I wanted to keep going and going at him. I took him down with a double and a low single.”

Plainfield forfeited at 103, making it 25-24 with only three matches left to wrestle. A 15-4 major decision at 112 by Plainfield’s Nathan Davis over Matt Freyn followed, leaving Hinsdale’s hopes for victory in the hands of Ernest Battaglia and O’Donnell.

Facing a 7-point team deficit, Battaglia posted an 11-3 major over Plainfield’s Jeremy Brown at 119, and O’Donnell ended the dual at 125 by earning a 3-1 edge in takedowns and a 7-5 win over Tommy Kokinnes that tied the score at 28-28.

Red Devils assistant coach Jim Zajicek isn’t a fan of the fireman’s carry that O’Donnell has embraced, “but he loved it last night. Brad hit it three times to win the dual meet for us,” Hayes said.

The Red Devils were awarded the win based on criteria, a penalty point that was levied on the Plainfield Central bench.

Both teams wrestled without a handful of starters, with Jason Talamonti and Sean Sullivan absent for Hinsdale and Joey Uccardi unavailable for Plainfield.

“It was a good win for the team and for the program. It was a team effort and the guys came out and wrestled hard. They got after it.”

Saturday’s quad

The Red Devils continued to roll through Saturday’s quad at St. Charles East, winning all three duals against Willowbrook, Homewood-Flossmoor, and the host Saints.

Central won 49-21 over Willowbrook, 39-20 over St. Charles East, and 48-24 over Flossmoor. “Everyone was all pumped up from last night,” O’Donnell said. “We knocked off the No. 2 team yesterday and we wanted to carry that on.”

Tommy Ward wrestled once on Saturday, and the freshman made it count with a 15-5 major decision win over a tough St. Charles freshman in Ryan Rubino. George Tolbert also posted a win at 103 against Flossmoor, while Matt Freyn went 2-0 with a pin and a major decision at 112.

“Tommy (Ward) is a gamer and he comes out and wrestles hard in dual meets,” Hayes said. “He and Tolbert have both been pretty solid for us.”

The freshman Battaglia won by fall against Flossmoor, and lost to a ranked senior in St. Charles East’s Brandon Rubino for the second time this year. “He’s going to be a good one,” Rubino said after winning a major decision. “He’s already good. I think maybe I just have an advantage in experience over him right now, and my takedowns were good today.”

O’Donnell won 6-3 over the Saints’ Joe Dede and won a major decision over Willowbrook’s Jeff Urbanowicz in going 2-0 at 125. Hutchinson went 1-1 including a fall over Flossmoor’s Dillon Thompson at 130.

“Brad O’Donnell had a big win last night for us and he carried it over to today,” Hayes said. “He wrestled his butt off.”

Terry Ward topped Willowbrook’s Kevin Steder by 9-3 decision and lost a tough 2-1 decision to one of the Saints’ top wrestlers in Alex Maynard at 135. Evers went 1-1 at 140, including a 6-2 win over East’s Aureliano Tochimani, who recently won a tournament title at Glenbard West.

Steve Stefani went 2-0 at 145 and Ryan Smith also posted a win at 145 for Hinsdale on Saturday. At 152, Wilm lost to a pair of highly-touted wrestlers in East’s Nick Scimeca and Willowbrook’s Steve Congenie, but ended his day with a 5-0 win over Flossmoor’s John Beale.

Strocchia used an escape in the second overtime of his match against East’s Mike Caddy to win a 5-4 decision, and posted a 9-4 decision over Willowbrook’s Jeremy Krueger to go 2-0 on the day at 160. Lutz also went 2-0 with a pair of pins on the day.

Allen dominated the competition throughout Saturday’s quad, posting a trio of pins on the day.
