Red Devils place sixth at Geneva's Newbill Invitational

Monday’s practice should provide a spirited couple of hours at Hinsdale Central. The Red Devils struggled to find the chip on their collective shoulder in a sixth-place performance at Geneva’s Newbill Invitational on Saturday.

After placing fourth at this year’s formidable 27-team Whitlatch tournament and fifth at another formidable tournament in this year’s 26-team Berman Classic, Central placed sixth in a 19-team field in Geneva.

But after the Newbill ended, it wasn’t where they placed that had Red Devils’ wrestlers and coaches feeling less than thrilled.

“We didn’t come out ready to wrestle, right off the bat,” Red Devils coach Jason Hayes said. “And that’s my fault. I didn’t have the guys ready. We talk about being a tournament team and we didn’t come out and do that.”

“We have to make some adjustments and learn from it. We’ve got Plainfield Central next Friday, and three duals, so we need a tough week of training to get after it.”

The Red Devils went 5-7 in the opening round with two byes, and 5-2 in the quarterfinal round. Of Central’s five semifinalists, only heavyweight Jack Allen reached the title mat, and the Red Devils went 21-22 in matches wrestled.

For Allen, the satisfaction of winning a second straight Newbill title was lessened in light of the rough day his teammates had in Geneva.

“I don’t like it. We have to work harder in the room,” Allen said. “We have to wrestle as hard in practice as we do in matches. Coach said we’re going to talk about that on Monday.”

“We need to wrestler tougher,” senior Joe Strocchia said. “When something goes wrong in a match, you have to suck it up. That’s what we have to work through.”

The Red Devils had eight wrestlers win place medals on Saturday. In addition to Allen’s title, Hayes got a trio of third-place finishes from Strocchia (160), Ernest Battaglia (119), and David Lutz (171).

Coming off a title win at Palatine, Allen was dominant in Geneva, posting three first-period pins and a major decision on the day. It was a quick low single taken on the title mat that set up his pin of Carmel’s Steve Lester.

“I noticed that he was coming up to the line and just standing there, so I pushed him out of bounds. When we got back to the line, I just went right for his leg,” Allen said. “I’m wrestling better than I was a couple weeks ago. I feel like I’m getting there.”

Saturday marked the third time this season that Battaglia has reached the third-place mat in a tournament. The freshman injury defaulted to place fourth at this year’s Whitlatch, and has now placed third in both the Berman and Newbill.

Battaglia opened with a pin of West Chicago’s Anthony Brinkman before losing by 7-3 decision to Stillman Valley’s Nick Harrison, and then posting a major decision win for third over Larkin’s Patrick Lipscomb.

Both Strocchia and Lutz went 3-1 on the day, with Strocchia’s lone loss coming to Richmond-Burton’s Jack Dechow, by 7-3 decision in a semifinal match. The two tangled on the title mat at Palatine two weeks ago, where Dechow won a 4-2 overtime decision.

“I have to stop doing just enough to win. I have to start killing myself, every match,” Strocchia said. “Dechow keeps going. He’s a tough kid. I’d love to wrestle him again.”

Strocchia ended his day with a 3-0 win over Bob Kerr of Brother Rice on the third-place mat. Lutz had two pins and a major decision win on Saturday, with his lone loss coming in a tough, 1-0 loss to eventual runner-up Taylor Schuck of Burlington Central.

Lutz pinned Stillman Valley’s Derrick Watson on the third-place mat.

Terry Ward finished fourth in a tough field at 135, opening with a major decision win over Burlington Central’s Buddy Toth. Ward lost his semifinal by decision to eventual champ Blaise Butler of Boylan, who was also voted the tournament’s outstanding wrestler. Ward finished the day with a tough, 1-0 loss on the third-place mat to Stillman Valley’s Tad Hawley.

Sean Sullivan placed sixth at 215, opening with a 10-4 decision against Lake Zurich’s Adam Cantwell before losing by decision to eventual champ Chris Fagan of Oswego East. Sullivan pinned Gage Park’s Frank Massallo before losing on the fifth-place mat by 1-0 decision to Geneva’s Will Duerr.

Brad O’Donnell’s seventh-place finish at 125 featured a loss in his opening match followed by three consecutive wins to end the day. O’Donnell became the fourth Red Devil on the day to lose to an eventual Newbill champion when he lost to Stillman Valley’s JJ Whaley.

O’Donnell won 2-1 over Carmel’s Jeremy Schnur and pinned St. Edward’s Melvin Pepin before pinning Oswego East’s Andrew Chastain on the seventh-place mat. He pinned both Pepin and Chastain in the first minute of each match.

Matt Freyn placed eighth at 112, earning an 8-7 win over Oswego East’s Cody Peyton in the process.
