Congratulations to the Freshmen who, by defeating OPRF on Friday, won the WSC Silver crown with an undefeated record.  Great job to the entire squad.  Attached are a couple of pictures that Mrs Hutchinson took at the recent DGS Invite.  Hope to get more on the web-site soon.

The Varsity dropped its first dual meet of the year to a very tough (top 15 in the state) OPRF team on Friday night, the only conference loss of the season.  On Saturday, our guys beat Willowbrook and Homewood-Flossmoor, but lost to St Charles East (a top 25 team).

Without a scoreboard, it was tough to tell how the JV did against OPRF.  I do know they won at Morton.

Oak Park hands Devils first loss in Silver showdown

January 17, 2008

By Jeff Davis | SPORTS EDITOR

If the Hinsdale Central wrestling team doesn't win a share of the West Suburban Conference Silver Division championship this season, it will not be because of a lack of effort.

The Red Devils suffered their first loss of the season in their conference showdown against host Oak Park 41-15 Friday in their Silver finale to finish 5-1 in league action. Oak Park (13-1, 4-0 in Silver) must beat Downers Grove North and defending champion Lyons Township to win the Silver title outright.

"Now we need some help from someone else and that's a tough situation to be in," Hinsdale Central coach Jim Zajicek said. "(Oak Park is) a better team. There's no harm in losing to a better opponent if we're wrestling as hard as we can. The kids didn't quit in any of the matches."

Hinsdale Central won only four of the 14 matches. Winners were Terry Ward (11-4 at 103 pounds), Dimitri Simeakis (10-5 at 171), Pat Clegg (pin at 215) and Ron Mains (3-1 at 285).

The Red Devils (14-2) finished 3-2 on the weekend, beating Morton 43-22 Jan. 10 and Homewood-Flossmoor 46-15 and Willowbrook 51-18 while losing to St. Charles East 37-22 Saturday at their own quadrangular. They lost three of four matches that were decided in the final 30 seconds against St. Charles East.

Clegg won all five of his matches, four by pin, while Ward (2 pins), Mains (pin) and Simeakis each went 4-1. Tim Knowles (135) avenged an earlier loss to his nemesis, H-F's Jimmy Scrementi, with a 2-0 win. Freshman Jack Allen (189), filling in for injured Allan Cameron, had two pins.

Devils win first invite since '85

January 10, 2008

By Jeff Davis | SPORTS EDITOR

The Hinsdale Central wrestling team already beat Lyons Township for the first time since 1985. Now the Red Devils have done something else for what is believed to be the first time since then.

They won a tournament title, topping the 18-team field at Geneva's Jim Newbill Invitational with 158.50 points over Stillman Valley (152) and Brother Rice (146.5).

"The kids don't remember 1985. They weren't even around," Hinsdale Central coach Jim Zajicek said. "The majority of the team is juniors (so) what they do remember is winning three tournaments as freshmen and having success as sophomores. And winning a varsity tournament is just the next progression. Our expectations are set pretty high this year."

Hinsdale Central keyed its title victory by going 8-2 in the final round. Freshman Terry Ward (103 pounds) and sophomore David Lutz (145) captured championships. Quinn Francis (160) placed second; junior Tim Knowles (135) and senior Rob Mains (285) finished third; juniors Tom Jung (140), Schwyn Francis (152) and Pat Clegg (215) were fifth; junior Dimitri Simeakis (171) took seventh; and sophomore Brad O'Donnell (119) was eighth.

Ward pinned Richmond Burton's Mike Heuer in 5 minutes, 5 seconds in the 103 final after winning by pin and 15-1 to improve his record to 22-5. It was his second tourney title and fourth top-six tourney finish of the season.

Lutz captured his first varsity title after placing in his previous three invites this season by topping St. Edward's Will Lytle 11-5 after winning 11-7, 6-3 and by pin to increase his record to 23-6.

"Terry looked good, especially in the finals, and the kid he beat was an honorable mention ranked kid," Zajicek said. "David has been solid all along. Whenever you win a tournament, especially as a sophomore, you're doing a lot of things right."

Hinsdale Central (11-0, 5-0 in Silver) also beat Downers Grove North 34-21 Friday to set up its West Suburban Conference showdown at Oak Park (12-1) in its conference finale. With a win, the Red Devils claim their first conference title since 1985.

Suburban Life 01/09/2008 article re: HCHS Wrestling Wins

1/6/08

On Friday, the freshmen and varsity both beat Downers North on Senior night to close out an undefeated home dual season.

As of last week, Illinois Matmen (www.illinoismatmen.com) had HCHS ranked number 25 in the state.  If you have no life beyond wrestling, you ought to check it out.  It has individual and team rankings, tournament results, a lot of mindless wrestling chat, links to newspaper articles (there is a Jan 6th article about the Genveva tournament in the Daily Herald that you might want to look at), links to off season training, etc.

I don't have all the details yet, but the freshmen won at the DGS Invite.  I believe we had six individual champions.

1/2/2008

Last week, the varsity team took 5th place (out of 25 teams) at the 53rd annual Berman Holiday tournament at Palatine High School .  The Red Devils finished 19 points ahead of the 6th place team, and 20 points ahead of LT (for anyone who's counting).  As comparison, last year our guys placed 10th.  In addition to a great team performance, we had 7 wrestlers place in the top 8:  Terry (5th), Tim (2nd), David (4th), Schwynn (6th), Quinn (4th), Pat (5th) and Robbie (4th) :  I think I got those all right.

Friend pulls fast one on Devils' Knowles

January 3, 2008

By Jeff Davis | SPORTS EDITOR
Hinsdale Central junior Tim Knowles' opponent in the 135-pound championship at Palatine's 25-team Berman Holiday Classic Friday wasn't just another wrestler.

It was a friend -- Hinsdale South senior Joe McGuire.

McGuire got a reversal with 18 seconds left to turn a one-point deficit into a 4-3 lead, then got back points down the stretch to pull out a 7-3 title win.

"It was tougher losing to a kid you knew because you're friends," Knowles said. "He's a good wrestler."

Both Knowles (16-4) and McGuire (21-1) admitted to being nervous for their first match against one another after growing up together in the Red Devils Junior Wrestling Club.

"He was always with me and we were great friends and played football and stuff," McGuire said. "We're still competitors. I can't think of him as a friend when I'm on the mat. I have to go against him like any other guy."

They'll likely meet again in the teams' dual meet on Jan. 24 and possibly at regionals and sectionals.

"I'll see Joe again two or three more times so next time hopefully it's the other way around," Knowles said. "I got sloppy."

It figures to be a learning experience for Knowles, who took a 3-2 lead with a second-period escape before McGuire came back just as he did with three wins in the final 20 seconds for a title win at Hinsdale Central's Rex Whitlatch Invitational Dec. 15.

"Timmy Knowles, that was a solid performance wrestling toe to toe with Joe McGuire, (but) you can't afford to have a mental letdown like that in the last 30 seconds of a match against a good kid," Hinsdale Central coach Jim Zajicek said. "He's a junior and he hasn't figured it out yet completely, but he's in the process of learning. He'll get it.

"That's where Tim is right now. He's hanging with ranked guys, he's in a position to beat ranked guys, but he hasn't beaten any of them yet. He'll get there, it's just going to take him a little bit of time."

Knowles showed his potential by improving on last year's fourth place at the tourney. He won 9-2, 5-1 and 3-2 over Lincoln-Way Central's Steve McCollum (14-4) to reach the finals.

"I wrestled well until the finals," Knowles said. "I still have a ways to go, but I beat some good kids. I want to make it to state and then hopefully place."

Hinsdale Central (151 points) finished fifth, just 10 points behind fourth-place Hinsdale South. Clovis (287.50), one of the top-ranked teams in California, Leyden (206) and Lincoln-Way Central (185) were the top three finishers.

The Red Devils had six other top-eight place winners. Sophomore David Lutz (145), junior Quinn Francis (160) and senior Rob Mains (285) placed fourth; freshman Terry Ward (103) and junior Pat Clegg (215) took fifth and junior Schwyn Francis (152) was sixth.

Freshman Jack Allen finished 3-2 with three pins while filling in for injured Allan Cameron (shoulder) at 189.

"He's a freshman at 189, which is different than being a freshman at 103," Zajicek said. "He beat a senior, he beat a junior and pinned a kid from Lyons Township that's a good, solid kid. That's a pretty good performance.

"Overall, we have a very, very solid team, wrestle hard and we're getting better."

Central frosh Ward earns first tourney title
(http://www.pioneerlocal.com/clarendonhills/sports/693742,ch-hcwrestling-121307-s1.article)

December 13, 2007

By Jeff Davis | SPORTS EDITOR

Hinsdale Central freshman Terry Ward has already won a few national youth wrestling tournaments.

On Saturday, he had a new addition for his resume: His first high-school invitational title.

Ward captured the 103-pound title at the Downers Grove South Invitational with an 8-1 win over Wheaton Warrenville South's Mark Savenok for a 3-0 finish.

"I don't think I've ever had a freshman win that before so it's fantastic," Hinsdale Central coach Jim Zajicek said. "Hopefully it gives him some confidence going into (Hinsdale Central's 24-team Rex Whitlatch Invitational Friday and Saturday, Dec. 14-15)."

Junior Alex Orton (130) and senior Tim Knowles (135) also claimed titles for second-place Hinsdale Central (204 points), which was edged by Batavia (208.5) for the championship in the nine-team field. Batavia, which had four champs, was 5-3 in head-to-head matches against Hinsdale Central.

"It was close," Zajicek said. "Batavia is a good program year in and year out. We have a young team and our kids know we're solid and it was a good showing with 11 kids placing."

The Red Devils' Schwyn Francis (152), Quinn Francis (160) and Dimitri Simeakis (171) placed second, while Tom Jung (140), David Lutz (145), Allan Cameron (189) and Rob Mains (285) finished third and Brad O'Donnell (119) was fourth.

Ward's biggest win came in the semifinals, where he pinned Bolingbrook's Frankie Campos in 3 minutes, 9 seconds after trailing 2-0. Ward won his opener 13-2.

"Terry showed a lot of heart," Zajicek said. "Campos was stronger than Terry, but (Campos) chose down in the second period and Terry is good on the mat and pinned him."

Orton edged Bolingbrook's Alfredo Najera 6-5 in the 130 semifinals and Wheaton South's Spartak Chino 4-2 in the finals. Knowles topped Downers South's Alan O'Brien 3-2 in the 135 final.

In their finals, Quinn Francis lost 3-0, Simeakis fell 7-4 and Schwyn Francis was pinned.

On Friday, Hinsdale Central (9-0, 3-0 in conference) beat Glenbard West 36-24 in a West Suburban Conference Silver Division meet.

TIME OUT Central's heavies play key role on mat

December 13, 2007

Hinsdale Central's wrestling team is striving to be top-heavy with heavyweight Rob Mains and 215-pounder Pat Clegg poised for big seasons.

"Our strength is balance from top to bottom, so having those two perform to their potentials would be a blessing," Hinsdale Central coach Jim Zajicek said. "I believe they will. They help give us the deepest depth in my (six) years here."

Mains and Clegg didn't reach the Downers Grove South Invitational championship matches Saturday when the Red Devils came in second off titles by 103-pounder Terry Ward, Alex Orton (130) and Tim Knowles (135) and runner-up finishes by Schwyn Francis (152), Quinn Francis (160) and 171 Dimitri Simeakis (171).

Everyone from this exciting team will be on full display this weekend at Hinsdale Central's two-day, 24-team Rex Whitlatch Invitational with individual championships due to start about 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15.

Mains, a senior, is one of the smaller heavyweights at 245 pounds.

"Robbie is having a good year," Zajicek said. "He had a big jump from his junior to senior year as a football player, establishing himself as one of the best players on the offensive line -- not only on our team, but in the conference.

"He had a solid year at heavyweight last year with a 27-14 record. He has a different mentality this year, a different toughness. He broke my head gear wrestling me, snapped the chin strap."

Mains was only practicing what Zajicek had been preaching.

"It was a standing front headlock," a surprised Mains said of the broken strap. "It just happened."

Zajicek was thrilled that it did.

"The idea is to put your head into your opponent's jaw and apply the pressure," Zajicek said. "I'd been working with Robbie on that move since his sophomore year and he finally did it. No one was happier than me. I said, 'That's it, Robbie. You've got it.' He just smiled.''

And Clegg?

"Pat is dedicated to wrestling all year long," Zajicek said. "He seldom misses a spring open gym."

A junior All-West Suburban Silver nose guard in football, Clegg said intimidation is part of his game plan.

"I like to inflict pain right away," he said. "There's nothing like looking into your opponent's eyes and sensing he doesn't want to continue."

Clegg is particularly adept at shooting, the fine art of diving at your opponent's legs for a quick takedown. He tries it out in practice on Zajicek.

"Here he is, wrestling a former college wrestler," said Zajicek, who competed at Hinsdale Central (Class of 1989) and Augustana College, where he also starred in football and shot put in track. "He wrestles me and tries to shoot me.

"You'd expect a kid to clam up, but he goes out and wrestles his match no matter who he's wrestling."

Mains and Clegg look forward to individual practice time with Zajicek, who is their size.

Mains: "I learn something from him every time."

Clegg: "I usually go against Robbie or (189-pounder) Allan Cameron in practice, but I really get up when Coach comes over. He knows so much about the sport."

Zajicek calls himself "lucky'' to have had good heavyweight wrestlers lately, including Drew Levy from the 2001-03 seasons, and R.G. Yapp and Ed Carpenter two years ago.

He also feels blessed to have former Red Devils' wrestling star Pat Quirk come to practice two or three times a week to work with wrestlers at all the weights, including Evan Goss, Brad O'Donnell, David Lutz and Nick Auriemma.

"Some good teams are coming to the Whitlatch," Zajicek said. "We'll be ready for them."

Devils beat LT for first time in 23 years

December 6, 2007

By Jeff Davis | SPORTS EDITOR

Hinsdale Central junior Alex Orton didn't feel like a wrestling hero Friday, just someone "who knew what I had to do."

But his 2-0 victory at 130 pounds in the final match was the difference as host Hinsdale Central (8-0) beat two-time defending conference champion Lyons Township 32-27 in West Suburban Conference Silver Division action. It was the Red Devils' first dual-meet win over the Lions in 23 years.

>

The fact that Orton defeated returning all-conference wrestler R.J. Dilcher -- something he wasn't aware of -- made his win that much more impressive.

"A lot of people congratulated me after the match, but I didn't feel I was completely deserving of everyone congratulating me because our whole team did phenomenal," Orton said. "It was just one match in the end, right place, right time kind of thing. I'm glad I was in a situation that I could make something happen."

What was especially impressive about the win is that the Red Devils were without top wrestler Tim Knowles, who had an infection, and fell behind 12-0 with three losses before rallying for seven straight wins.

"If somebody told me Tom Jung was going to lose (6-5 at 140 in the second match), David Lutz was going to lose (9-4 at 145) and Tim Knowles wasn't going to wrestle, then I probably would have said we'd lose as a team," Hinsdale Central coach Jim Zajicek said. "By the same token, that's a testament to how strong the whole team is. Everyone picked up the slack."

Ironically, Zajicek attended the Red Devils' last win over LT as an eighth-grader during the 1984-85 season and never beat the Lions in his four years as a Hinsdale Central wrestler. LT won 12 consecutive Silver titles from 1989-2000.

"We talked about it in practice, how it's been 23 years. Our coach used that to motivate us," Orton said. "He kept saying how we really needed to get back at them for all the guys who have gone through the program and lost to them."

Orton (6-2) admitted he was nervous but ready before his match. He used a second-period escape and stalling point to get the lead. When Dilcher chose the top position in the third period, Orton wouldn't allow himself to get turned.

"This is my first true year as a varsity starter so it was pretty big," Orton said.

Junior Quinn Francis (7-0) beat another returning all-conference wrestler, Mike Ryan, 8-1 at 160. It helped that Francis knew Ryan's main move since he wrestled in the Junior Red Devils program as a youth.

"I was really nervous going in," Francis said. "I'm glad I wrestled Mike Ryan because I beat out one of their best kids. That was my first big win ever for wrestling. It makes me feel really confident, but I don't want to get too overconfident."

Hinsdale Central also got wins from Schwyn Francis (8-3 at 152), Dimitri Simeakis (8-6 at 171), Allan Cameron (pin in 3 minutes, 36 seconds at 189), Pat Clegg (9-7 at 215), Rob Mains (pin in 2:30 at 285) and Terry Ward (pin at 103).

Even with the win, Zajicek knows the conference race is from over with Oak Park, Downers Grove North and York expected to be tough to beat.

"There are a lot of duals left ahead of us," Zajicek said.

On Saturday, Hinsdale Central dominated host Riverside-Brookfield 60-9, Vernon Hills 55-18 and Hubbard 80-0 in a quadrangular.

The Red Devils came charging out of the gate in their first quadrangular meet of the season Nov. 24 at Mundelein.

The Red Devils dominated the host school (43-21) and Johnsburg (45-23), and also fought off New Trier 34-28 to produce a sweep of all three opponents.

The upper weights highlighted Hinsdale Central's success, as heavyweight Rob Mains scored six points in each of his bouts with two wins by pin (of Mundelein and New Trier, the latter in just 40 seconds) and a victory by injury default.

Pat Clegg (215 pounds) also posted a 3-0 record, highlighted by a pin against New Trier and a 21-8 major decision vs. Mundelein.

David Lutz (145) also had a big day with two pins (one coming with 12 seconds left in the New Trier match for the Red Devils' first win against the Trevians) and a 10-3 decision over Johnsburg.

Tim Knowles (135) dominated his matches against Mundelein and Johnsburg, needing a combined 2:44 to register two wins by pin (59 seconds vs. Johnsburg).

The close battle with New Trier was also keyed by a 16-4 major decision by Quinn Francis at 160 that produced four points. Francis' 3-0 record on the day also included a 16-2 major decision against Johnsburg.

Mac Mahoney (103) won by forfeit against New Trier, then with the Red Devils up 28-25, Brad O'Donnell (11-7 victory at 125) and Alex Orton (6-5 win at 130) closed the meet with key wins against the Trevians.

Orton (3-0 record) and 189-pounder Jack Allen each had pins against Johnsburg.

CENTRAL WRESTLING PREVIEW Balanced lineup, experience boosts Devils

November 22, 2007

 COACH: Jim Zajicek (6th season)

2006-07 RESULTS: 15-6 in dual meets, 3-3 in West Suburban Conference Silver Division (tied for 3rd); seventh at Willowbrook Regional

RETURNING STARTERS: Seniors Evan Goss (112 pounds), Chase Culbertson (189) and Rob Mains (285); juniors Tim Knowles (130), Tom Jung (140) and Pat Clegg (215); and sophomore David Lutz (145)

OTHER VARSITY RETURNEES: Juniors Alex Orton (125), Nick Auriemma (135) and Allan Cameron (189)

NEWCOMERS: Senior Mike Novak (171), juniors Schwyn Francis (152), Quinn Francis (160) and Dimitri Simeakis (171); sophomore Brad O'Donnell (119); and freshman Terry Ward (103)

OUTLOOK: Despite graduating two of its best wrestlers in program history in Frank Battaglia (3rd at state at 152) and two-time state qualifier Matt Tolbert (119), as well as sectional qualifier Milo Imrie (160), Hinsdale Central could be a better dual-meet team this season with more overall balance and experience.

"We've always had some holes with kids who may not have been ready to wrestle on the varsity level," said Zajicek, who has built the program's numbers to 80 wrestlers. "This year, we have every weight class covered, and as long as we stay healthy, we should be a fun team because we have a crew of kids that has the potential to be a 20-match winner at all 14 weight classes."

Third-year varsity wrestler Knowles could have the most potential, while Mains is the most improved and Culbertson is a two-time all-conference pick.

Knowles finished 27-13 and earned all-conference honors last season but suffered a knee injury the week of regionals just as he appeared to be hitting his stride.

"Tim Knowles could be all-state if the cards fall in line," Zajicek said. "Last year, he had just broken into the 'best of the rest' (rankings) and was looking really good when he hurt his knee. He wrestled a lot of good kids close."

Mains appears poised to make a big jump after going 27-14 and finishing fourth at regionals to just miss a sectional berth for a top-three finish last year.

"He is so much better than he was a year ago. He has so much more confidence and a different level of toughness," Zajicek said. "Last year, he lost six matches that if he had a little more confidence he would have had a better year. Those are the ones I expect him to win this year. I not only expect him to win, I expect him to dominate."

Culbertson finished 23-13 last year and 22-12 as a sophomore and could benefit by being pushed by Cameron (13-6), who will fill-in early in the season with Culbertson gone on a family trip.

Lutz (20-15), Jung (13-13), Goss (10-20), Clegg, Orton and Auriemma are among Red Devils who have shown progress thanks to strong offseason commitments. Zajicek said Jung "worked harder than just about anyone" with 50 offseason matches and 50 offseason workout sessions in open gyms.

Among the newcomers, Ward has an extensive youth wrestling background as a state champion who won national tournaments. He was limited the last two seasons by concussions but has 30-win potential, Zajicek said.

O'Donnell lost only one match during the freshman team's regular season and placed second at the frosh-soph conference tournament. Both Francis brothers lost only one junior varsity match last year and placed second at the frosh-soph conference tourney. Simeakis and Novak could alternate at 171 after Simeakis won their challenge match 2-1.

"This is the type of team I love coaching," Zajicek said. "They're very attentive kids, they're on time and they worked hard in the offseason."

Whether that's enough to fulfill one of Zajicek's longtime goals of winning conference remains to be seen. Defending champion Lyons Township, which graduated six all-conference wrestlers, and defending runner-up Oak Park figure to be tough again.

"We have a fairly young team, but I think we've got a shot," Zajicek said. "I don't think there's going to be an undefeated team in the conference. I think it's going to be how the weight classes match up from week to week."

KEY TO SUCCESS: "Winning the close matches because we're going to have a lot of them -- doing the little things that turn a loss into a win," Zajicek said.

Win or lose, Devils impress their coach

January 18, 2007

By Jeff Davis | SPORTS EDITOR

Hinsdale Central wrestling coach Jim Zajicek couldn't say enough good things about his wrestlers after last weekend.

And that was after the Red Devils even had lost a couple of meets.

Hinsdale Central (11-5) completed a busy stretch of six matches in three days with a 4-2 record after beating Homewood-Flossmoor 43-29 and Willowbrook 40-27 and losing to St. Charles East 30-28 Saturday in its own quadrangular and losing to West Suburban Conference Silver Division co-leader and area-ranked Oak Park 39-15 Friday in Hinsdale.

The Red Devils defeated Lisle 54-21 and Morton 42-21 Jan. 11 at home.

"The guys don't see it very often where we go 2-2 on the weekend and I'm praising them," Zajicek said. "But we wrestled about as well as we could and we lost to better opponents.

"We're really starting to wrestle that style I've been trying to coach the last few years, and Saturday was an example of that and even Friday (was). The kids wrestled hard through the end of the period, through the whole match and never gave up easy points. That's a true testament to how hard they've worked."

But Zajicek hardly wants the Red Devils to be satisfied.

"Now what are we going to do to take that next step to be the team that wins those matches?" he said. "That's going to take work in the offseason and continuing to bring better and better athletes into the program."

Seniors Matt Tolbert (119 pounds) and Frank Battaglia (152) won all six of their matches for Hinsdale Central. Tolbert moved up to 125 to edge Oak Park standout Lillashawn Coleman 5-4, topped an undefeated Morton wrestler 9-4 and had two pins. Battaglia topped Oak Park's Peter Lovaas 6-5 and added four pins and a technical fall.

Battaglia became the Red Devils' career wins leader at the Geneva Invitational Jan. 6, surpassing 1997 graduate Ben Black's 120 wins. Black will be on hand when Battaglia is honored for his feat today, Thursday, Jan. 18, against Hinsdale South (11-5) in Hinsdale.

Hinsdale Central's Tim Knowles (130), Milo Imrie (160) and Chase Culbertson (189) finished 5-1 in the three meets. Knowles pulled out two 7-4 decisions, including one over state qualifier Jake Schnall of St. Charles East, whom he beat for the second time this season. Culbertson had three technical falls and 9-0 and 10-4 decisions, while Imrie posted two pins, a technical fall and two seven-point decisions.

Andrew Sullivan (171) and Rob Mains (285) each went 4-2 with three pins, while Allan Cameron (215) was 4-2 with two pins.

Tolbert, Battaglia bounce back to win titles

January 4, 2007
By Jeff Davis | SPORTS EDITOR

Hinsdale Central senior Matt Tolbert didn't win his school's Rex Whitlatch Invitational a few weeks ago like he had hoped, but he did the next best thing Dec. 28.

Tolbert beat the wrestler who did win his coveted Whitlatch crown -- and convincingly -- earning a 15-5 major decision over Leyden's Chris Reed in the 119-pound championship at the Berman Holiday Wrestling Classic at Palatine.

Tolbert (20-1) didn't get the chance to meet Reed at Whitlatch Dec. 16 after getting caught with a move and pinned in 49 seconds by West Aurora's Josh Zinzer in the semifinals for his only loss of the season, but came back to win two matches to take third. Reed then beat Zinzer 14-11 in the final.

"It was nice to beat the guy who won it because I really wanted that tournament and I got caught. I thought I'd send a message to him," said Tolbert, who had seven takedowns in the final to finish 4-0 in the tourney with a pin and 14-5 and 11-6 decisions.

"(That) loss just made me want it more. I just practiced hard and got in some extra conditioning (over the holiday break). I knew I was going to bounce back."

Like Tolbert, Hinsdale Central senior Frank Battaglia has bounced back from his only loss of the season in the Whitlatch finals. Battaglia (19-1) pulled out two close matches to finish 4-0 and win the 152-pound championship. Sophomore teammate Tim Knowles (130 pounds) took fourth and senior Milo Imrie (160) was eighth for the Red Devils, who placed 10th in the 25-team field with five starters missing because of holiday vacation conflicts.

"I wanted to come back from the (4-0) loss (against Lockport's Luke Roth) and really step it up another notch and wrestle better," Battaglia said. "I had a lot of tough matches. I felt like I won the big scrambles, wrestled until the end of the match, really wrestled well. This was basically a check point to see where I am because we're coming to a peaking time for state, and I felt great. It was a confidence boost."

Battaglia beat Palatine's Ross Grande 3-0 in the final by getting a takedown and escape at the end of first and second periods after edging Oswego's Devin Larsen 1-0 in the semifinals.

"Those are the close matches that he was always in when he was always getting the point scored (against him) late in the period and on the edge of the mat," Hinsdale central coach Jim Zajicek said of Battaglia, who also won by pin and 10-1. "So he's doing exactly what happened to him as an underclassman, and that's a good sign. That's what he needs to do in order to be a state placewinner, which is what his goal is."

Knowles (16-8) continued to impress in his second varsity season. He finished 3-2, including a solid 4-3 win over St. Charles East senior Jake Schnall (10-4), a state qualifier who beat Tolbert when they were freshmen. Knowles won his first two matches 10-0 and 3-0 before falling 12-2 to Minooka's Kevin Bokoski (19-1) in the semifinals. Knowles lost to Mundelein's Nick Kainrath 10-7 for third.

"Tim Knowles looked great," Zajicek said. "He's having a great year, and he's listening real well, which is all we really ask of the kids."

Imrie (14-7) went 2-3 with 6-4 and 4-3 wins, losing to Warren's Bryce Howard 5-3 in overtime in the seventh-place match.

The Red Devils (109.5 points) finished 10 points behind ninth-place Glenbard East. Minooka (269.5), Lincoln-Way Central (194.5) and Lyons Township (193) were the top three finishers.

Hinsdale Central senior Gerome Diadula (171) finished 3-2 with a pin and technical fall. Junior Chase Culbertson (189) was 2-2 with two pins and Mike Novak (145) and sophomore Allan Cameron (215) earned their first varsity wins.

Devils' Tolbert, Battaglia pin down Downers South Invitational titles

December 14, 2006

By Jeff Davis | SPORTS EDITOR

Hinsdale Central senior wrestlers Matt Tolbert and Frank Battaglia made their move in a hurry to win championships at the Downers Grove South Invitational Saturday.

It just happened to be the same move -- a side cradle.

Tolbert won the 119-pound title by pinning Oswego's Sam Chamberlein in 43 seconds, while Battaglia claimed the 152-pound crown with a pin of Oswego's Devin Larsen in 1 minute, 50 seconds. Both champs had three pins on the day to improve their records to 9-0 with eight straight pins.

"It's kind of funny because both me and Matt got the guy in the exact same way. That was pretty cool," Battaglia said. "When you end the side cradle, you get it locked up to the point where the guy's leg is over his head and there's just no possibility of him getting out at all."

Battaglia, whose other two pins came in the second period, won the 145-pound title at Downers South last year. He hopes to reach state for the first time since his freshman year.

"That kid (in the final) was probably the best kid I've wrestled so far," Battaglia said. "I've been working a lot and switching it up and not just doing the same old stuff.

"I feel great right now. I would say this is the most confident I've been in the four years I've been here. Every match I'm going out there and wrestling my match. I got a taste of (state) freshman year and haven't since. I've never been more hungry for it."

Tolbert, who also had pins in 3:08 and 34 seconds, is hungry for his own return to state after breaking his ankle days before sectionals last season. He placed fourth at state at 103 as a sophomore. He won at Downers South as a sophomore, but sat out the invite last year and as a freshman with a rib injury.

"I feel good. What's nice this year is it seems like it's a lot easier to make the weight. I feel stronger. It's been a nice transition from 112," said Tolbert, who has signed with Purdue. "I want to win state. Anything less would be a disappointment."

Tolbert and Battaglia led Hinsdale Central (145.5 points) to third behind Bolingbrook (197) and Batavia (194) and ahead of Downers South (139.5) in the nine-team field.

Hinsdale Central freshman Dave Lutz (140) finished third by pinning Batavia's Andrew Thomas in 51 seconds to finish 4-1 with three pins. Junior Evan Goss (112), sophomore Tim Knowles (135), seniors Steve O'Donnell (145) and Milo Imrie (160), sophomore Pat Clegg (215) and junior Rob Mains (285) placed fourth, with each scoring three points or less but losing by six points or less in their third-place match, including Clegg's 3-2 loss.

"We're close," Hinsdale Central coach Jim Zajicek said. "Underclassmen are going to learn from their mistakes. They're hopefully going to see some different results in the tournaments down the road."

Hinsdale Central (5-1) beat Glenbard West 45-26 Friday in its West Suburban Conference Silver Division opener. Tolbert, Knowles, Lutz, Battaglia, Chase Culbertson (189) and Mains had pins.

Mat success readying Imrie for military life

December 21, 2006
By Jeff Davis | SPORTS EDITOR

The battles in which Hinsdale Central senior Milo Imrie engages on the wrestling mat might be nothing compared to the ones he could be involved in following high school.

Imrie is preparing for life in the military through an improved discipline and work ethic in his sport, and he's reaping the rewards.

Imrie finished second at 160 pounds at Hinsdale Central's 18-team Rex Whitlatch Invitational Saturday, losing only 5-4 to Lemont's Nick Simone in the championship.

Still, Imrie's 3-1 finish that included a pin and 10-0 semifinal decision improved his record to 11-4 this season. After giving up a takedown to start the third period in the final, he earned a stalling point and then an escape with 45 seconds left to get within a point, but couldn't get a late takedown.

"I'm happy with second because I never even made it past the third round in my past years here, so this was a pretty big improvement for me," said Imrie, who was seeded second. "Sophomore and junior year, I just didn't care that much. This year, I'm joining the Marines after high school and learning how to put the effort in means a little more to me than it did last year."

Imrie leaves for boot camp in August after first considering the military in eighth grade following in the footsteps of his uncle, a Vietnam veteran. His father, Gordon, and uncle, John, wrestled at Hinsdale Central, with his uncle placing second at state in 1966.

"I have good grades, but I want to do something I'm really proud of before college," said Imrie, who scored an outstanding 35 on his ACT and 2,280 on the SAT.

Imrie was one of five top-five medalists for the Red Devils, who placed sixth with 123.5 points behind Leyden (128) and ahead of Hinsdale South (113) in the two-day tourney. West Aurora (226), Minooka (217) and Lockport (161.5) were the top three finishers.

Hinsdale Central senior standouts Frank Battaglia (152) and Matt Tolbert (119) finished second and third, respectively, after both suffered their first losses of the season. Sophomore Tim Knowles (130) placed fourth, and junior Rob Mains (285) was fifth with three pins.

"We had an OK day," Hinsdale Central coach Jim Zajicek said. "With how strong the field was, I said if we were in the top half, I'd be satisfied. If we were in the top five, I'd be happy. And we were fourth or fifth all the way up 'til this last round (so) that was a little disappointing."

The second-seeded Battaglia's face screamed disappointment even after the gym had begun emptying out. He lost to Lockport's Luke Roth 4-0 in a championship battle of top-five, state-ranked wrestlers after edging Minooka's Steve Olin 7-5 in the semifinals. Roth -- who was named the tourney's Outstanding Wrestler -- rode Battaglia most of the final two periods. Roth scored all his points in the final 1 minute, 26 seconds on a technical violation on Battaglia (13-1, 10 pins) for applying pressure after the ref's whistle and a takedown.

"I'd rather not win this one and beat him downstate when it matters," Battaglia said. "I don't think I wrestled as smart as I could have. He's obviously really good on the mat and I just felt like I was better on my feet, and I spent most of the match on the mat so I lost. As long as I don't dwell on it and make myself better for it ... ."

The top-seeded Tolbert (14-1, 9 pins) was stunned to get pinned by West Aurora's Josh Zinzer in 49 seconds in the semifinals when he got caught in an arm lock. Tolbert came back to dominate No. 2 seed Marcus Rangel of Minooka 15-5 in the backdraw and then Naperville Central's Chris Muscato by 22-7 technical fall for third place. Zinzer lost 14-11 in the finals.

"Overall, I wrestled well, but he caught me in like a throw and that was it," Tolbert said. "I was upset, but this is going to make me work that much harder. There's so much ahead of me still (that) I can't get down over this."

Knowles compiled a 4-2 record, beating Hinsdale South's Jon Goldsher 5-3 to avenge a loss last year before losing to Homewood-Flossmoor's Jimmy Scrementi 10-4 in the third-place match.

Hinsdale Central's Gerome Diadula (171) and Chase Culbertson (189) finished 2-2.

On Dec. 13, Hinsdale Central lost to York 36-31 in a West Suburban Conference Silver Division dual that came down to the final match for the third year in a row. The Red Devils, who won 30-29 in the teams' previous two meetings, lost the final four matches -- 9-3 at 215, 6-3 at 285 and by pins at 103 and 112.

Hinsdale Central's winners were Tolbert (pin in 1:57), Knowles (pin in 1:22), Tom Jung (pin in 3:18 at 135), John Song (8-6 at 145), Battaglia (pin in 2:57), Imrie (16-7) and Culbertson (11-5).

"We got outscrapped," Zajicek said. "They won the close matches, scored the points on the edge of the mat, scored the points right at the end of the period. If we add those scrappy points that we needed, we win instead of lose."
