Hinsdale Central posts ‘huge win’ over mighty Marist

By Gary Larsen Contributor January 10

You don’t hang your hat on a regular-season win in any sport, so suffice to say that Hinsdale Central knocked off one heck of a wrestling team on Saturday.

Competing in a quad hosted by Lincoln-Way Central, the Red Devils (9-4) won 34-21 over Marist (17-5), giving Central its biggest dual meet win of the season.

“It was a huge win for the program and I’m very proud of the kids,” said Central coach Jason Hayes said. “We finally have our lineup healthy and down to weight, and we went out and competed hard. Marist has got an exceptional team and we out-wrestled some of their better kids.”

Marist placed second in this season’s brutally competitive Dvorak Tournament, and recently beat previously No. 1-ranked Carl Sandburg.

The Red Devils earned an 8-6 edge in matches against the Redhawks, beginning with a 15-3 major decision from unbeaten heavyweight Brian Allen. Marist ticked off three wins to grab a 9-4 team lead, but the Red Devils refused to give up bonus points among the three.

Marist’s Mark Duda is ranked third in the state by Illinois Best Weekly, but the Red Devils’ George Tolbert held him to a 7-3 decision win at 113, and Mason Cruickshank lost 9-4 at 120 to Marist’s Mario Leveille, who won a medal at the Dvorak tourney
